How to Harness the Power of Delegation

As an entrepreneur, someone who is sharing your message and going out to create an income, this is going to be one of the most important pieces for you to get. It took me a long time to feel even capable of being able to delegate but I’ve learned a few things along the way. Here are some tips to help you employ the power of delegation in your business.

Know Your Why

You have to have a why - a reason to fill up your time with something productive. If you don't, you will constantly do the things that are mundane, that anyone else could do that take you from your gift or expertise.

Understand Why You Should Delegate

It really is phenomenal what happens when you start to form a team and delegate to them the things you don’t need to do - the things that someone else can do. Here are some cool things that happen: You get to trust more people. You get to work on being precise and clear in your messaging and directions. You get more time freedom to do what you love and to do what you need to do in order to make that impact.

Check Your Limiting Beliefs

I had a lot of limiting beliefs as I was starting to delegate. A big one was that it cost a lot of money to delegate. Then I started thinking about how much money it would really cost and it really wasn't that much. There are a lot of people who will do a lot for you and are happy to get paid less money than they would be working at a restaurant. It’s not always about money. It’s about the mission you’re fulfilling. Find people who will work for less or even volunteer because they want to be part of something great.

The first thing we delegated when I was growing my company was the household chores. It was eating up several hours a week so we found someone who wanted to clean and take all of that over. It was remarkable because my limiting beliefs dissolved when I saw that others could do some things just as well or better than I could. The money and all of the other excuses faded, and I started to see how many more things in my life I could free up so that I could focus on teaching and making an impact.

So, whatever your excuse - not enough money, lack of trust or confidence in other’s abilities, afraid of losing control or not getting credit - whatever it is, realize it’s a limiting belief.

Take Action

  1. Find one area in your life that you can delegate. Think about something that if you stop doing it would actually free up time you could then use to more fully live your mission. It might be something like laundry, dishes, cleaning floors, or mowing the lawn. Pick one thing. If you’ve already delegated household chores, pick an area in your business. A few ideas are setting appointments, researching things, or getting you booked in places. Pick one thing that you are going to delegate this week.
  2. Decide who you are going to delegate to. You have neighbors, friends, neighbor’s kids, etc. There are all sorts of people out there who would be willing to work.

Commit to delegating. As you do, you will increase your capacity for worthwhile things in your life. You will have more time with your loved ones. You will have more business time. Whatever it is that you need, you will be able to start adding it into your day.
