Your Guide to the Natural Seasons of a Business

As autumn sets in with its cooler temperatures (and even some snow here in Utah), we are reminded that seasons change. What a lot of people don’t realize is that businesses have seasons too. Most entrepreneurs have this idea that success should always be on the rise, like a graph with a straight line angled upward. That’s like being in springtime and looking to improve spring, then improve it some more, and more, and more. It can cause chaos.

Instead of expecting exponential consistent growth, understand that there are times and seasons – and good reasons for them. Know what season your business is in and what purpose that season is to serve. Move with it and over the long term, you’ll create exponential growth.

Here's a helpful guide to the seasons of a business:

Spring is planting season. This is when you’re preparing the soil and laying down seeds. Those seeds take root and begin to grow. There is a lot of work being done but may not be a lot of results yet. Here are some business activities that go on in spring:

  • Marketing
  • Networking
  • Booking speaking gigs and appearances
  • Building up social media audience
  • Create energy and excitement
  • Continue watering and growing relationships and opportunities

Summer is the season of rising temperatures, exponential growth, and activity. This is when you need to be sure to nurture those seeds you planted. In your business, the focus is on things like:

  • Strategy Sessions/Sales Conversations
  • Follow Ups
  • Customer Service

Autumn is the time to harvest. You reap the hard work of your spring and summer. Some focal points of fall are:

  • Delivering Materials & Services
  • Fulfilling speaking engagements
  • Teaching
  • Mentoring
  • Hosting webinars (this can also be a spring activity depending on your intention with the webinar)

Winter is a time to rest and renew – but it is not a lazy season. If you find yourself in winter, make sure you’re taking full advantage of the power of this season. It’s a great time to prepare yourself for a busy spring with things like:

  • Research
  • Branding
  • Content creation
  • Website development
  • Visioning
  • Analyze – what worked and what needs to be changed
  • Alter direction
  • Alternate methodologies

Keep in mind that sometimes there are long periods of a season and sometimes you can live multiple seasons at once. You can even move through all of the seasons in a day, week, or month. It’s not always what you think or expect. The point is that no matter what the season is, embrace it fully. Allow yourself to enjoy living in the present moment regardless of what season you’re in.
